We get a lot of questions from customers — and we love it. An informed customer makes better decisions and gets better results. So we've rounded up the most common questions we hear at Elevated Auto Detailing and answered them as honestly as we can.
How much does auto detailing cost?
Pricing varies depending on the size of the vehicle, its current condition, and which services you choose. A basic interior or exterior detail typically starts around $100–$150 for a standard sedan. A full detail combining both interior and exterior runs $200–$350 for most vehicles. Specialty services like paint correction or ceramic coating are priced separately based on the scope of work. We always assess the vehicle before quoting — that way you get an accurate number, not a surprise.
How long does a full detail take?
A thorough interior and exterior detail typically takes 4–8 hours depending on the vehicle's size and condition. Paint correction can add several additional hours — a single-stage polish might take 3–4 hours, while a full multi-stage correction on a neglected vehicle can take an entire day. We never rush the process. Quality detailing takes time, and we'd rather do it right than do it fast.
What's the difference between a car wash and auto detailing?
A car wash cleans the surface of your vehicle quickly — it removes loose dirt and grime but doesn't address embedded contaminants, interior cleaning, paint defects, or protection. Auto detailing is a comprehensive process that goes layer by layer: decontaminating the paint, correcting surface defects, protecting with wax or ceramic coating, and deep-cleaning every surface inside the cabin. Think of a car wash as brushing your teeth and detailing as a full dental cleaning.
How often should I get my car detailed?
For most drivers, a full detail every 4–6 months is ideal. If you have kids or pets, eat in the car, or park outside year-round, every 3 months is a better target. Vehicles with ceramic coatings can go 6–12 months between maintenance details. In New York, we especially recommend a spring detail after winter salt exposure and a fall detail before the cold months hit.
Is ceramic coating worth it?
For most vehicle owners who care about their paint, yes — absolutely. A professional ceramic coating bonds chemically to your paint and lasts 2–5 years, providing far superior protection against UV damage, bird droppings, road contaminants, and water spots compared to traditional wax (which lasts 4–8 weeks). Over time it typically saves money by reducing how often you need full details. It also makes the car much easier to keep clean day-to-day.
Can detailing remove scratches?
It depends on the depth of the scratch. Light surface scratches and swirl marks in the clear coat can typically be fully removed with paint correction. Scratches that have penetrated through the clear coat into the base coat or primer cannot be removed by detailing — those require touch-up paint or a body shop. During our vehicle assessment we'll tell you honestly what can and can't be improved through detailing.
Do I need to do anything before dropping off my car?
Just remove any personal items and valuables from the interior. You don't need to pre-wash the car — in fact, we prefer to assess it in its natural state so we can see exactly what we're working with. If you have any specific areas of concern (a stain, a scratch, an odor), just point them out when you drop off and we'll make sure to address them.
How do I maintain my car after a detail?
The best things you can do: hand wash with a two-bucket method every 2–3 weeks, deal with bird droppings and tree sap immediately (they etch paint fast), avoid automatic car washes with spinning brushes (they cause swirl marks), and use a quality quick detailer spray between washes to keep the surface clean. If you have a ceramic coating, use a ceramic-safe maintenance spray. We're always happy to give you specific aftercare advice for your vehicle.
Do you offer mobile detailing?
Contact us directly to ask about our current service options — availability for mobile detailing can vary by season and location. We're always happy to find the most convenient option for you.
How do I book an appointment?
The easiest way is to reach out through our website's contact form or give us a call. We'll ask a few questions about your vehicle and what you're looking for, and get you scheduled. We recommend booking at least a few days in advance, especially for paint correction or ceramic coating appointments which require more time to prepare.
