Auto Detailing FAQs: Your Questions Answered

We get a lot of the same questions from customers — and that's a good thing. It means people care about their vehicles and want to make informed decisions. Here are the most common questions we hear at Elevated Auto Detailing, with honest, straightforward answers.

How much does auto detailing cost?

Detailing prices vary depending on the size of your vehicle, its current condition, and which services you're getting. A basic interior or exterior detail typically starts around $100–$200. A full detail combining both can run $200–$400. Premium services like paint correction or ceramic coating are priced separately based on the scope of work — we always assess the vehicle first and provide a transparent quote before any work begins.

How long does a full detail take?

A thorough full detail typically takes 4–8 hours depending on the vehicle's size and condition. Paint correction can add several more hours — a single-stage polish might take 3–4 hours, while a multi-stage correction on a larger vehicle can take a full day. We never rush the process. Quality detailing takes time, and cutting corners shows.

What is the difference between a car wash and auto detailing?

A car wash cleans the surface of your vehicle quickly — it removes loose dirt and dust but doesn't address embedded contamination, swirl marks, staining, or interior grime. Auto detailing is a comprehensive, methodical process: decontaminating the paint, correcting surface defects, deep cleaning every interior surface, conditioning leather, treating trim, and applying protection. Think of a car wash as a quick rinse and detailing as a full restoration.

How long does ceramic coating last?

A professionally applied ceramic coating typically lasts 2–5 years, depending on the product used, how the vehicle is maintained, and environmental conditions. To maximize longevity, we recommend avoiding automatic car washes, washing with a two-bucket method, and scheduling a maintenance detail every 6–12 months to keep the coating performing at its best.

Can detailing remove scratches?

It depends on the depth of the scratch. Light swirl marks and micro-scratches in the clear coat can typically be fully removed or significantly reduced through paint correction. Deeper scratches that go through the clear coat into the base color layer — or all the way to bare metal — cannot be removed by polishing alone and would require touch-up paint or a body shop. We can inspect your paint and give you an honest assessment of what's possible.

Do I need to do anything before dropping my car off?

Not much — just remove any personal items, trash, or valuables from the vehicle before your appointment. We'll handle everything else. If you have any specific concerns (a stain you want us to focus on, an area of paint you're worried about), just let us know when you drop off and we'll make note of it.

Is detailing worth it for an older car?

Absolutely. In fact, older vehicles often see the most dramatic transformations. Years of accumulated oxidation, swirl marks, and interior wear can be dramatically reversed with a proper detail and paint correction. Whether you're looking to restore pride in your daily driver, prep a vehicle for sale, or simply protect what you have — detailing delivers real, visible results regardless of the vehicle's age.

How soon after detailing can I drive my car?

For a standard detail, you can drive your vehicle immediately when you pick it up. If you've had a ceramic coating applied, we recommend keeping the vehicle dry for 24–48 hours and avoiding washing it for 7 days to allow the coating to fully cure and bond to the paint.
